The first meal of the day in Rome is a very serious matter. Whether you are looking for a sweet pastry and coffee or a hearty savory feast, the places I’m recommending here serve the best breakfast in Rome to start your day with energy and carry on until lunchtime.
One of our go-to restaurants when we want to spoil ourselves for breakfast is Coromandel, a super cozy restaurant just behind Piazza Navona. For a more traditional pastry and coffee/cappuccino breakfast, some of the best options are Linari in Testaccio and Andreotti in Ostiense, but if you are looking for original creations, head to the vegan Wani Bakery or Tulipane for a mix of modernity and tradition.

Coromandel – One of the best breakfast places in Rome’s Centro Storico
One of our favorite places for breakfast in Rome, we couldn’t start our list anywhere else. Not only does Coromandel give you the right energy to start the day, but you won’t feel hungry until lunch and, if you are like me, even beyond!
The breakfast of Coromandel is far from being a simple cappuccino and croissant. Of course, if you want, you can also order your favorite sweet treats including pancakes, waffles, croissants, cinnamon rolls, and sweet bagels.
If you are more into a savory breakfast, you will find plenty of recipes with eggs in all manners, French toast, and sandwiches. There is no lack of vegan options such as porridge, avocado toast, and scrambled tofu. This is the place I would recommend for who are looking for English breakfast in Rome.
Coromandel is not the cheapest breakfast in Rome but the great quality and attention to detail are guaranteed. If you are staying near Piazza Navona or the Pantheon, I’m guessing you will become a regular here! Plus, if you’d rather have brunch or lunch, Coromandel got you covered.

Marigold – Breakfast at an organic bakery in Ostiense
They define themselves as a “micro-bakery”, they are located in the cool Ostiense neighborhood and have the goal of serving one of the best breakfasts in Rome. How? By baking their own pastries and bread with sourdough and high-quality flour.
You will be spoiled for choice between cinnamon swirl, avocado on rye bread where you can add a poached egg, and omelet with seasonal greens among the other options. There is no lack of drinks from the popular coffee and cappuccino to a pot of tea to freshly-squeezed orange and homemade lemonade.
This is a perfect place to stop before sightseeing around the relics of Rome’s industrial archaeology. Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy a rich brunch menu.

Linari – Best breakfast in Rome’s Testaccio
Linari is very famous for its traditional pastries, flaky and delicious. Apart from a wide array of croissants, Linari is a master for Roman sweet treats such as the cream-rich maritozzo. All types of coffee and soft drinks are on the menu.
Here the breakfast is Italian in all ways, from the culinary offer to the over-the-counter standing experience. You will see many locals and professionals grabbing their coffee shots and leaving.
Linari is also a famous Roman pastry shop so if you have a sweet tooth, get lost in their display of cakes, pastries, and tarts.

If you are following a plant-based diet but don’t feel like porridge, head to Wani in the southern Garbatella neighborhood not far from Saint Paul Outside the Walls Basilica. On display are fantastic colorful cakes strictly made using natural ingredients, traditional pastries such as croissants, cookies, and Italian-style biscuits, as well as famous desserts such as tiramisu and Sacher.
Pick your favorite pastry filled with your cream of choice between hazelnut, pistachio, cream, and chocolate, and your favorite drink, everything strictly vegan.

Le Levain – One of the best breakfast places in Trastevere
One of the best breakfast places in Trastevere, Le Levain has captured our hearts (and taste buds) from the first time we went. Leaning towards the French sweet tradition, their leavened pastries are flaky and soft, and their display is a feast of cakes, French-style bread, and tarts.
We had breakfast at Le Levain a few times so I can safely say that we like it, but it’s not a place where you can sit and relax because it’s very small. Before you get despondent, if you enjoy their products and creations, you will be happy to know that you can enjoy them in a more relaxed atmosphere in the Sallustiano neighborhood near Porta Pia gate, Piazza Fiume, Villa Borghese, and Villa Torlonia where they opened a nice cafè.

Nero Vaniglia – Traditional pastries for breakfast in Rome’s Garbatella
This is a famous pastry shop in the southern Garbatella neighborhood, one of the areas you should consider if you are looking for budget accommodation in Rome.
Nero Vaniglia is roughly located between Ostiense train station and Garbatella metro stop. Their offer for breakfast starts first and foremost with traditional pastries such as brioches and croissants. Delicious and perfectly made, you can find them in the most classic as well as more original flavors.
They take pride in making simple and genuine products and their offer was immediately welcomed by locals. Nero Vaniglia has been around for quite a while and they are still an institution in the neighborhood.

At breakfast, they play with bread in sweet and savory versions: from corn bread with scrambled eggs to fruit bread with butter and sugar. Leavened desserts are made following a tradition that promises an ambrosial experience.

If you are a croissant person, this is your Roman place for breakfast. You will find their counter packed with croissants and brioches to fill with your favorite cream. We tried their pistachio cream and my pistachio-expert Afghan husband loved it.
Ercoli is a great place for breakfast in Rome also because of its strategic position in Trastevere, so perfect before starting sightseeing in this quaint traditional neighborhood. One of the aspects we truly enjoyed was the comfort. When bars and cafes are very small in central Rome, it’s hard to find room to sit and relax. Ercoli offers a comfortable space where you can enjoy your breakfast in peace.

Cristalli di Zucchero offers a high-end pastry experience in the Monteverde/Gianicolense for your breakfast in Rome, perfect if you have an apartment in this beautiful green area and if you are visiting Villa Pamphilj, one of our favorite parks in Rome for walking and letting our son play.
Even though they serve also coffee and beverages, Cristalli di Zucchero is not a simple bar and offers an innovative experience. Adventurous at heart, they are not afraid of testing and researching to provide their customers with daring combinations and high-quality baked goods.

There is always a bit of queue that always increases on weekends. The location is unbeatable and you can stop here whether your hotel is in the area or if you are starting sightseeing bright and early even if coming from another neighborhood. And if you are late for breakfast, at Barnum, they also serve a scrumptious brunch.

Andreotti has been serving a very typical Roman breakfast since 1931. Famous for their cream-filled maritozzo, Andreotti is always very popular among locals. In fact, be it on weekends or weekdays, breakfast time is pretty much always packed, and finding a table is not an easy task.
Their choice of pastries and cakes is vast and the high quality and fresh products are always a guarantee for a top breakfast.

CON.TRO Contemporary Bistrot – Bakery and pastries north of Rome
CON.TRO Contemporary Bistrot is not in the immediate city center but in the Monte Mario Alto neighborhood north of Rome. Well-served by frequent trains to San Pietro and Trastevere, this is a great area to find affordable accommodation and comfortably reach the city center.
Contro Bistrot makes their pastries in-house as well as their pizza with the oven well visible from the outside. Along with the classic breakfast pastries such as cornetti, bombe, and saccottini, you can also find creamy pastries such as cheesecakes and fruit tarts. Among the drinks, along with coffee, you can also choose from a nice tea selection and fresh smoothies.
Stylish and cozy inside, Contro Bistrot features also a spacious outdoor for all meals from breakfast to dinner.

Regoli – Historic pastry shop in the multicultural Esquilino neighborhood
Impossible not to include Regoli among the places for a top breakfast in Rome. Regoli is a historic Roman pastry shop open since 1916.
The quality of their leavened pastries is what attracts customers every day, first and foremost for their delicious maritozzo but also for croissants and sweets like profiteroles and fruit tarts.
